LISTSERV Anti-Virus Protection

L-Soft recommends you to keep your software and anti-virus solutions up to date and running the latest versions of LISTSERV and LISTSERV Maestro with maintenance and support.

Updates for F-Secure Server Security for Linux Will Stop 31 Mar 2022

L-Soft customers who are currently using the Linux version of F-Secure Anti-Virus (Linux Security 11) will lose access to automatic anti-virus signature updates for that product after March 31, 2022. This is because Linux Security 11 is at end of life, and F-Secure has not provided L-Soft a suitable replacement.

L-Soft advises Linux customers to switch to route their inbound LISTSERV mail through an anti-malware appliance or service.

Another option is to use the LISTSERV Anti-Virus Station (AVS) add-on service.

For more information about the AVS solution, please visit:

Please contact sales to inquire about licensing AVS.

Updates for F-Secure Server Security for Windows Will Stop 31 Dec 2021

L-Soft customers who are currently using the Windows version of F-Secure Anti-Virus (F-Secure Server Security 12) will lose access to automatic anti-virus signature updates for that product after December 31, 2021. This is because F-Secure Server Security 12 is at end of life, and F-Secure has not provided L-Soft a suitable replacement.

For Customers Running F-Secure Server Security on Windows Server 2016 and Later

There is a supported and working replacement solution using Windows Defender (which is part of Windows Server) to replace F-Secure Server Security. This involves the following steps:

1. In Windows, under Settings/Update & Security/Windows Defender, ensure that Real-Time Protection is turned on. We also recommend enabling (if they aren't already enabled) Cloud-Based Protection, Automatic Sample Submission, and Enhanced Notifications.

2. Run Windows Update to ensure that Windows Defender is updated to at least version 1.355.x.y, and to the latest version if newer than that. If you have just installed Defender as a Windows feature for the first time, it is likely that the default base installation is too old for LISTSERV to recognize.

3. Uninstall F-Secure Server Security.

4. Restart LISTSERV. After restarting LISTSERV, issue a RELEASE command. This should result in something like the following:

LISTSERV(R) High Performance for Windows version 17.0, managed by:
  servermanager@yourdomain.com

Master nodes file version: 2001-02-07 08:30:26 (VERS9922)
NJE peers file version: 2006-11-29 13:28:30
Internet peers file version: 2018-12-11 12:12:24
Service file version: 2009-10-07 16:45:40 (VERS9922)
Alias file version: 2013-09-09 09:03:20
Virus database version: 2021-12-15 10:54:47 (1.355.305.0)
Running under: Windows Server 2016 Datacenter x64 Edition
Build date: 21 May 2020

The virus database version number shown in parentheses should match the anti-virus definition and anti-spyware definition versions shown at the bottom of the Settings/Update & Security/Windows Defender page.

This is all that is required to switch LISTSERV from using F-Secure Server Security to using Windows Defender for anti-virus scans. Updates for the Windows Defender program and its malware definitions will come through Windows Update. The use of Windows Defender with LISTSERV 17.0 for Windows is fully supported. It should also work with earlier versions back to LISTSERV 16.0-2017a, but L-Soft strongly recommends that all customers running earlier versions should upgrade to LISTSERV 17.0.

For Customers Running F-Secure Server Security on Windows Server 2012 R2

Windows Server 2012 R2 does not natively support a version of Windows Defender that can be used with LISTSERV. Other solutions using third-party anti-virus suites are possible.

(Please note that there are solutions floating around the Internet that say that you can enable Windows Defender on Server 2012 R2 by enabling Desktop Experience in the Server Manager. Unfortunately, the version of Windows Defender enabled in this way is not the same as the version of Windows Defender provided with Server 2016 and later, and will not work with LISTSERV.)

If you are already running a different Windows anti-virus product in your enterprise, it should be possible to install your existing anti-virus product on your server and then use it with LISTSERV by adding the site-level configuration setting:

FOREIGN_ANTI_VIRUS=1

The setting can be made either by adding the string shown above to LISTSERV's \MAIN\SITE.CFG file, or via the web interface under Server Administration/Site Configuration/Anti-Virus and then setting the value for FOREIGN_ANTI_VIRUS to "Yes (1)" in the dropdown list box. In either case, the server must be restarted to pick up the change.

For more information about the FOREIGN_ANTI_VIRUS site configuration variable, visit:
http://www.lsoft.com/manuals/17.0/sitevars/FOREIGN_ANTI_VIRUS.html

Note that we recommend removing F-Secure Server Security from your server before installing your existing anti-virus product on the machine.
