Improving health care in rural Oregon


Washington, DC (December 25, 1995) – The Oregon student group ACCESS (A Collaborative Community Education and Support System) has been chosen by L-Soft international, Inc., to receive computer hardware and software valued at more than $11,000 as part of L-Soft's Awards for Student Internet Innovation program. The donation will make it possible for ACCESS to use LISTSERV® electronic mailing lists and other Internet technology to improve health care in rural Oregon. LISTSERV®, created by Eric Thomas in 1986, is one of L-Soft's products.

Student volunteers from ACCESS's Rural Health Connections group will create and manage the lists, which will be used to facilitate communication between rural health care providers and information sources such as medical schools, libraries and medical experts. Without such online resources, these people have to drive for hours in order to do research or meet colleagues. By subscribing to ACCESS's LISTSERV lists, they can share the latest research results or consult with each other on difficult cases. "LISTSERV discussion lists will be a cure for the isolation that rural health care providers must endure. We hope that this effort will become a model for healthcare providers worldwide", says project organizer Deana Molinari.
