London, May 27, 2003 – L-Soft announced today the expansion of its anti-virus capabilities by launching the LISTSERV® Anti-Virus Station (AVS). This add-on to the renowned LISTSERV® email list manager will make it possible to prevent the delivery of infected email messages to the 130 million subscriptions of public LISTSERV lists worldwide. LISTSERV AVS is a complement to the traditional virus protection and works by scanning email messages for viruses, stopping infected messages before they can reach recipients who may not be protected by virus software on their computers.
"Considering the widespread use of email lists for customer communication, an accidental virus outbreak can not only damage your company's computer infrastructure but also tarnish the reputation you have built with your customers," said Eric Thomas, L-Soft CEO. "Preventing the distribution of a virus altogether protects customers with outdated or no anti-virus capabilities. The LISTSERV AVS works as a complement to regular anti-virus solutions, providing belt and suspender protection for your customer communication."
Through a partnership with the award-winning F-Secure, L-Soft's LISTSERV 1.8e became the first email list management software to offer virus protection in October 2001. Previously, LISTSERV virus protection was only available for the operating systems supported by F-Secure, Windows and Linux. The LISTSERV AVS was created to extend this protection to all LISTSERV platforms.
"Viruses such as the recent Fizzer email worm are being created all the time and then quickly spreading," said Mikko Hyppönen, Manager of Anti-Virus Research at F-Secure Corporation. "These viruses are capable of bringing the operations of millions of companies to a halt for days. It is crucial that all computers from gateways to laptops are protected - and the protection should always be installed, enabled and up-to-date."
The LISTSERV AVS has successfully prevented the spread of viruses in high-volume operations where the risk and potential damage were particularly high. Fraunhofer, a German research institute has stopped the spread of 1.7 million virus-infected email messages with the system.
"Efficient virus protection should be part of any Internet security strategy," said Christian Bonkowski, Project Leader, Institute of Media Communication, at Fraunhofer. "The LISTSERV AVS protects not only our own subscribers but also the larger Internet user base."
