Ease of use and virus protection among key improvements to LISTSERV
London, 22 May, 2002 – L-Soft today announced the launch of LISTSERV 1.8e, the latest version of its flagship email list management software. The software, that allows users to create and maintain email lists, now offers increased user-friendliness and security through a simplified web-based user interface and enhanced anti-virus protection. L-Soft has partnered with F-Secure (HEX: FSC), a leading provider of anti-virus technology, making LISTSERV 1.8e the first and, so far, the only email list manager in the industry that screens email for viruses.
The developments enable users to fully exploit the software's powerful features and reap the benefits of using sophisticated email campaigns to communicate effectively with existing customers, prospective customers or employees.
"After a turbulent year, the order of the day for most of our customers is to go back to basics," said Eric Thomas, L-Soft founder and CEO. "Organizations are asking for dependable, scalable professional software solutions to support email communication with their customers, and this is what LISTSERV is all about."
LISTSERV 1.8e's new Task Wizards guide list administrators through each aspect of email list management. Concise step-by-step instructions are provided for every function, while detailed clarifications are readily available from the comprehensive online help function.
In 2001, the estimated worldwide economic impact of computer viruses reached $13.2 billion. The proliferation of viruses transmitted via email lists continues to be a serious problem that can now be tackled by a simple and dependable solution: virus scanning in the email list manager. 45,000 infected messages are currently blocked daily by LISTSERV 1.8e beta-test sites. The inclusion of F-Secure virus protection leaves millions of LISTSERV 1.8e subscribers safe in the knowledge that they are neither initiating nor propagating the spread of viruses.
"The launch of LISTSERV 1.8e represents a significant leap in terms of security and usability to an already powerful mailing list system," said Spencer Warhurst, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, CCLRC, the main Research Councils UK institution providing the National Academic Mailing List Service to over 300,000 subscribers on over 4000 lists. "The new web interface provides much of the functionality that our users have expressed a desire for and the list configuration wizards work very effectively, allowing owners to get more out of their LISTSERV lists with ease."
LISTSERV 1.8e also includes filtering features that provide greater control over the type of messages that may be posted to discussion lists. The improved attachment filter gives list administrators control over which types of attachments, for example graphics or Word documents, are accepted on their list, while the new content filter rejects messages containing specified words or phrases. This is particularly useful for eliminating spam and unwanted automatic messages, such as "out-of-office" replies.
LISTSERV is available for Windows 2000/NT; Unix: Solaris (SPARC/Intel), Linux (Intel and IBM S/390), AIX (PowerPC), Tru64, HP-UX, IRIX, FreeBSD, BSDi; OpenVMS (Alpha) and VM.
F-Secure Anti-Virus is available for Windows and Linux.
